transgenic plant cover

2008 provided by Greenpeace

Mexico is center of origin of maize, has 60 varieties of native corn and about 2000 varieties adapted, also has a great biodiversity, so that contamination of all this genetic variation is a serious danger not only to our country but to mankind as in the case of losing the mother plants, farmers could not continue the practice of traditional varieties adapted to address issues of drought, pests and agronomic changes. Look at the map showing the crops that are contaminated with transgenic maize in Mexico.

The situation of the Mexican countryside is in a serious rollback. Building on this context, both the government and Transnational Corporations (ET), have argued that the implementation of Transgenic Maize (MT) in our country leads to an increase in the production of the grain. But already there are experiences that prove otherwise. The case of Filipino farmers confirmed that the seed of MT itself does not produce more and increase production costs because it is 2 to 6 times more expensive than conventional seed, also faces rejection by consumers in many countries Europe.

The background to the promotion of GMOs, is not the revival of our country but monopoly interests of corporations like Monsanto, which holds 90% of GMO patents. Another

risk factor for biodiversity are corn imports from the United States because it lacks a mechanism for segregation of conventional and transgenic varieties that exports, coupled with the fact that Mexico has no labeling and monitoring system of its imports. Therefore

Greenpeace demands the resounding rejection of the Mexican authorities to requests for experimental plantings in our territory, to establish a system of labeling products containing GMOs, and greater benefits and programs for the field, to promote projects sustainable agriculture or agro-ecological.

Therefore, in the Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture Transgenic and 2008, working for sustainable agriculture based on biodiversity, protect forests and other natural ecosystems, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, promote the health of soil and water, use less fertilizer and pesticides, is free GM and promote fair trade and our food sovereignty.
