Angkor Wat. The Sacred City of Cambodia

Angkor was an ancient city in the Khmer empire between the ninth and fifteenth centuries was our private. Its ruins are near the modern city of Siem Reap, Siem Reap Province, Kingdom of Cambodia. UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site in 1992.

Angkor is an ancient Sanskrit word to refer to city words and thom wat are the current Khmer language for "big" and "pagoda" respectively. So Angkor Thom can be understood as the big city and Angkor Wat as the Temple City . To understand the organization and construction of temples should look at the symbolic home Mount Meru, considered the home of the gods and the center of the Hindu universe.

Mount Meru Mount Meru
is a mythical mountain, considered sacred in many cultures. The Tibetans believe that Mount Meru Mount Kailash is the same (which is located in Tibet). For some Hindus, Mount Meru is composed of 109 peaks, of which Mount Kailas is the highest (where is the abode of Lord Shiva). In these peaks is also home to 33 million gods (which are highlighted Vishnu and Brahma).

In contrast to traditional Hinduism, Mount Meru is 450,000 kilometers in height, is shaped like a truncated cone very long, consists of a single peak, and is not on this planet but in the center of the universe (in Jambudwip).

But according to the text epic Maha Bharata (3503 and 3.1697), the Rig Veda and Harivilās (03/04/1944 and 03/04/1927), Mount Kailash is physically in the Himalayas.

Under Mount Meru are four continents mythological seven mountain ranges, which are surrounded by seven concentric oceans: the innermost, salt water (the only one known to human beings), then water sweet, milk, ghee (clarified butter), etc.

the end of these barriers is a door with a guard in each of the cardinal principal: for example in the east is the god Indra (king of the gods, god of the sky, lightning) with his elephant Airavata ( some say three heads).

After these four entries is the primordial ocean, which is considered infinite.
